Fire product documentation uses terminology to describe the production and testing process.

The testing of fire door products and manufacturing process uses terminology regarding the testing and observation process of the product.

Fire doors are rated to withstand a fire for a predetermined time, usually 30 or 60 minutes.

Definitions

Here is a list of the key definitions used in technical documents detailing the testing process for fire safety products

Product

When referring to the product, specifications describe the material that is used for a fire protection system. Features of the materials are an insulated structure containing steel elements that create the strength and fire resistance in the product.

Fire Protection System

The specifications refer to a fire protection system. For the purposes of the document, this is the product and method of maintaining and repairing the product around the structural steel element.

Stickability

The Loss Prevention Standards use “stickability” to refer to the fire protection system remaining fixed in its position during a fire test.

Critical temperature

For the purposes of this document, the “critical temperature” of a structural element refers to the point at which the temperature causes the product to fail to support the applied load. This critical temperature varies depending on the applied load of the element.

Test specimens

This document refers to the “test specimen” of a fire protection system. This describes the beams, columns and fire protection system itself to evaluate the efficiency of the overall system.

Passive fire protection systems

A passive fire protection system is a blanket / towel or board that is applied to systems aside from coatings and intumescent seals.

Section Factor

The document uses the term “section factor” to define a calculated ratio of the heated perimeter compared to the area of the entire section.

Heated perimeter

For the purpose of this document, the heated perimeter is the section inside a fire protection system. It is also the perimeter of the smallest rectangle that holds the steel section of the product for box protections systems.
