The British Woodworking Federation (BWF) has a series of critical and thought-provoking short films about the dangers of smoke.

These videos have been made as a part of the Fire Door

Safety Week, raising awareness for fire doors and their critical role in protecting against the threat of fire. The videos were created to inform the general public about how to check fire doors against regulations and report to those responsible for the building.

Roughly 3 million fire doors are produced and installed each year in the UK, many of which are badly made or fitted, and not maintained properly.

Also, fire doors are often left open, leaving them useless for their purpose.

The crucial inspections and need for maintenance of fire doors goes unnoticed and isn’t well understood outside of the industry itself. Recently, BWF ensure the support of the BWF-CERTIFIRE Fire Door and Doorset Scheme to raise the standards of fire door installations in the UK. This collects members with third-party certification relating to strict safety requirements.

3. The 5-step check

the five-step check allows you to check the safety and functionality of a fire door. This can be done by anyone, no matter where they are.

Check for the label that shows that the door is

fire door certified and can be traced back to the manufacturer.

Check that the door is closed properly and market with appropriate signage. It should also close properly against the frame.

Check the fire and smoke seal. The door should close with a gap around the door at a consistent 3mm.

Ensure the hinges are fire-rated and tightly and

firmly fitted with the correct number of screws.

Make sure the door is not damaged at all or

being wedged open.

A manufacturer can self-certify their own doors to comply with safety standards in the UK. However, third party certification ensures that it has undergone rigorous testing to check its efficiency in the event of a fire. This is not a mandatory certification but reassures you that the product has been checked to ensure that the door meets the third-party safety requirements. Included is a declaration of performance from the manufacturer, the original test report detailing the results, an effective quality control within the factory and full traceability back to the manufacturer.
